Thought these tops from Etsy shop I Don't Eat Bread were quite cute and quirky ... I love pieces likes this to layer up in a million different ways. They're hand-drawn with the reverse side on the back, not bad for $25... I'm heading to Cape Town next month for a bit of a getaway ... CokeZero Fest is on the agenda, lots of superfun bands like Panic at the Disco, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Bullet for my Valentine, Snow Patrol ... and Oasis (faint!). Sooooo .... of course a festival chic outfit is needed. It's an entire day of debauchery on an ostrich farm so must be something I'm prepared to roll around in the mud in, but still I want some cuteness to shine through the grunge!

I'm thinking a Pixie Geldof ensemble of teeny tiny acid-washed denim shorts, a ripped up concert tee, headband and a pair of knee-high gumboots that mean business ... or latex leggings, a tee and some faded pink Chucks that I can throw away after ... or this below, which I looooooooove but is a bit too flower child for the punk-assness of this here event like :)

And now for general lemmings ......

Ahh my wardrobe is in need of a lot of boring basic items, and being unemployed (ugh!) means getting really creative and thinking about cost per wear before buying. If I don't absolutely adore it and know I won't get that much wear out of it then its not a wise purchase. I'm going to die this winter unless I purchase some woolies, and my annoying yo-yo weight means I never have jeans that fit! And now that I have a new boy ... some slinky lingerie hee hee! :) I'm going American Apparel crazy at the mo, after my best friend so graciously gave me a cotton blend deep V-neck tee! The fit, the cut, the feel - I'm converted! It's the only tee that actually makes me look like I have boobies .. with assistance from Wonderbra. Yippee! And importing to SA is not too expensive so stocking up on more of those delicious little tees, tres versatile jersey dresses... high-waisted Night Fever black lame disco pants (granted, not a basic, but I had to have them .. for their um, Kylie Minogue novelty?!) ... some days I'm dressed down and minimalist and on others I like to be a bit of a queen, no? I will admit its been waaaaaay too long since I went the high maintenance route with the nails and the makeup etc. etc. but I think the main thing about being stylish is to just always be yourself ...... so I am as the mood takes me!!

Random clothing love

I'm in the peak of Summer and it's WAY too hot and uncomfortable to wear much of anything right now except a bikini or one's birthday suit. I'm quite happy being naked but finding something to wear in any un-airconditioned space is pure torture, which is why I'm finding planning my Winter wardrobe so appealing.. not sure how much Winter I'll see since I'm spending June/July in Europe, but bring on the chilly days so I can wear tights, studs and booties - gimme more!

Adieu Polaroid

I'm mighty downtrodden that I won't be able to "shake it like a Polaroid picture" any longer - Polaroid is ending their production of instant film as new digital technology has made it virtually obsolete, except for a few nostalgic photographers and of course, the film and fashion industries. Here's hoping they make a digital camera with a printer on the front (in array of fruity colours, thank you) or that the patent is released for another company to fill the gap in the market. Now the quest to find the last box of film for my beloved vintage instamatic (pic below)*sniff* ...What will hipsters capture their memories with now?

My Holy Grails

I must say I'm quite a loyal consumer when it comes to my favourite products - even ms. Kate Moss could shake her tambourine for them (lol!). There are brands I stick to because they are more than just packaging and promises... they actually work! Here are some of my favourite favourites, although I'd like to include BeneFit and Dr Hauschka as honourable mentions.

Nioxin

Oh my when I think of the journey my hair has been on.. from blonde to brunette and back again, awful awful box hair dye, too much product, too much ghd (although this has also been my saviour), not enough TLC! When I started seeing my new hairstylist about a year ago, who is a miracle worker of note, we nursed my hair from black with unsightly green undertones (in other words, a bad hair day on crack) to soft, bouncy baby blonde! I couldn't EVER have done it had she not introduced me to Nioxin. My hair was so weak before that washing and brushing gave me split ends and alot of fallout, but after just a few weeks of using the Nioxin Scalp Therapy system my hair felt thicker and softer ... and now after a year of concientious use, it's just LUSH, even after highlights and using straighteners. My biggest pro is the heavenly chocolately-minty smell and tingly fresh feel .. and it's so easy to rinse out.

Dermalogica

I've been blessed with clear skin so specialist products aren't really necessary .. but I won't put anything else on my face except the Derm, with Face Mapping (a zone-by-zone skin analysis) and a facial once very 4-6 weeks. Everything smells fantastic and never feels like chemicals on your skin, even their Daily Microfoliant, which doesn't contain granules liek a normal exfoliant, but enzymes that my facialist says "eat up your dead skin cells like Pacman" - hee hee!. I like that its developed by dermatologists who are more interested in good results than in frilly packaging and marketing hype - although I love their minimalist packaging, and the bottles generally last for ages as you only need a tiiiiiiiiny amount. You can play mix and match with alot of the range, I like to mix Special Cleansing Gel with Ultra Calming Cleanser and also mix different face masks together for a double boost to my skin. My HG has to be Precleanse, my secret weapon for really getting all the gunk out of my pores and removing eyemakeup. I'm very guilty of over-exfoliating and not drinking enough water sometimes so their Hydrating Mask is just what I need on hangover days.. and I could wax lyrical about their sheer but very protective sunscreens too. I just love Dermalogica, there is no replacement.

MAC

This is more of an unhealthy obsession than a preference .. *hyperventilates*. A good percentage of my student loan helped me take home more of these little treasures in the sleek black packaging than I could ever really need, but oh well! Try to walk into a MAC store and not be tempted by all those colours, all those textures, all those options, all that Limited Edition merchandise! It is truly a make-up lover's dream. My favourite product is their brushes, especially my 187 Stippling Brush ... your makeup is only as good as the tools you use. Their eyeshadows are fabulous cos you can literally buy every colour under the sun, they're very pigmented so the colour 'pops' and stays put till you remove it. Other favourites are bronzer, Strobe Cream, lipglass, Fix + spray and MoistureLush cream.

Essie & OPI

Not sure if I adore these in equal measure because I tend to buy more Essie products and get OPI manicures , but both are simply hands down the best nail polish you can buy in terms of formula, and I adore OPI's cheeky names for their varnishes like Aphrodite's Pink Nightie and Mrs O'Leary's BBQ.

The film is directed by 17 filmmakers, including Zach Braff and Scarlett Johannson, and Natalie Portman also lent a hand on scriptwriting and directing. It stars a killer ensemble cast - Orlando Bloom, a blonde(?) Rachel Bilson, Blake Lively (this should be interesting), Natalie Portman, Christina Ricci, Drea De Matteo, Hayden Christensen and more! I think it is a fabulous concept and wait in anticipation till its release on 13 February 2009 (what an ideal Valentine's Day movie), and then there is Shanghai, I Love You being released in 2010!

21 Today! Erm, yesterday!

Happy Birthday to me!

Oooooh and what an exciting one it was! I wasn't expecting to be quite this revoltingly spoilt and lavished with gifts and attention by all my gorgeous friends and wonderful family and boyfriend. I had a High Tea to celebrate with all my best girlfriends (who all looked super fine, can I just say) - a very special afternoon indeed, and my Mom treated me to a HEAVENLY day at the spa .. hot stone massage, seaweed body wrap, facial, pedi, was just SUPERB lovelies! Oh, and a car! Miss Vinyl Tutu now has WHEELS baby! (piccies to come)

My gorgeous (and very sneaky) boyfriend surprised me with pink balloons and lillies waiting for us in a cosy little Italian restaurant and showered me with beautiful, thoughtful gifts - a platinum locket (in the same cut as my ring he gave me for my 20th), a red Moleskine diary (I am OBSESSED, will have to post on this!), a jewellery box with pink Swarovski crystals for all my trinkets, and ... get this ladies.. a complimentary makeover at Yves Saint Laurent! Oh my oh my never in my wildest dreams would I have expected everything to be as fabulous as it was - Thank you to everyone who made it so special!

For Summer I'm a big fan of natural makeup - groomed skin & brows, dark tinted lashes, a natural pink flush, lip balm .. and that's it! I love MAC's creme blush but was looking for something that's easy to blend, really melts into my skin and stays put all day, which is why I ADORE BeneFit's PosieTint for giving my cheeks perfect pink dewiness.. and it also looks lovely on lips. Application is so simple .. the formula is quite thick but glides on super silky and dries quite quickly so blend, blend, blend! Zoe Foster from FruityBeauty says we must apply cream/gel cheek products "in the shape of a Nike symbol, You start the symbol on the apple (fleshy part of your cheek) and then take it down, and then up and under the cheekbone, right back to the top of your ear. Repeat on the other side of face. Blend any edges with a clean foundation brush or clean, blush-free fingers. This part: "under the cheekbone" is crucial, because if you apply your blush above your cheekbone, you drag your whole face down, and that ages you." Pretty! Adorable! Try it!

Music worth staying up for

I made a fabulous and most covetable little discovery indeed today whilst perusing the music shelves at the mall (and my boy was jamming on the in-store XBox, bless**). On a slight drum 'n bass and electronica overkill at the moment so I thought I might try some acid jazz/ambient tunes to mellow out, and inbetween bands like Infected Mushroom (gnarly!) and Fuckpony(?) were these enticing little gems, a must-have for late nighters like me!

Late Night Tales are a collection of mix albums where the tracks are personally selected and mixed by a diverse selection of DJs, recording artists and bands, who are asked to "delve deep into their collections and compile an album of their favourite music which inspired them to make music their profession - their favourite of the favourites". Groove Armada, Arctic Monkeys, Nouvelle Vague, Fatboy Slim, Belle & Sebastian, Zero 7 and The Flaming Lips are just a few of my choice compilations! However my absolute favourite mix is from Parisian muso-duo Air, quite undoubtedly the band I adore the most for their meltingly-good, cosmic pop! What could be better than relaxing with a glass of wine and the ultimate late night collection of pop-culture lullabies, the coup de grace to your Twilight Zone insomnia? The answer my lovelies is quite simple...not much!

What's up, Doc?

I had a black pair of Doc Marten's as a kidling in the 90s, when I was still fascinated by shoes that had

'tongues' but couldn't talk back to me (bless!), and usually paired them with character socks of whatever animated Disney feature was big at the time. They were the perfect boots for jumping on cracks in the pavement or scuffling big piles of leaves (joy!). My childhood nostalgia is certainly fuelling my love for the Doc revival ... and the new styles are soooo wearable! Candy-coloured patent and florals, yes please! Perfect for the transition between spring and summer when you can wear just a few breezy layers, maybe a cardi and tights, or just with a soft tee and shorts in the summer. Pair of opaques + girly dress a la Chloe Sevigny and we're good to go, or for those with perfect pins try model Erin Wasson's california-chic take on the look.

US Elle 'greases' up High School Musical

Disney must have hired better PR people to brainstorm the promo campaign for High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Gone are the crapola lucky packets (glee!) which pictured the all-American teenage cast mid-bounce and smiling way too sweetly for my liking (come on, nobody had that much fun in high school). Instead fans are given a much edgier (dare I say raunchy?) version of the HSM love triangle. The shoot has the retro-fantastic style reminiscent of Grease which is arguably the first classic high school musical, gracing the big screen over 30 summers ago! While Zac Efron is too much of a puppy to match up to the hottness that was John Travolta in his prime, any hot-blooded female (or male *blush*) cannot deny his sweet but broody appeal, and the girls are just pure not-too-made-up gorgeousness.

Fashion should never be taken too seriously, and that is why I'm rather taken with superhero chic, as seen at Luella Bartley's tongue-in-cheek Spring/Summer 2008 collection. Pale-skinned models were adorned with ruffled chiffon and pleated PVC, low-slung bags, backcombed hair and geek chic glasses. The frou-frou was given a tough-girl edge with wet-look laceup shoe boots ... it's all kind of Batgirl goes to the prom and I'm liking it.
